Indiana State law, Purdue University regulations, and fraternity national organizations all prohibit hazing, which is a form of physical and/or mental abuse carried out within the context of joining an organization. Hazing is when new members are subjected to physical or emotional distress, humiliation, embarassment, or any number of inappropriate activities. Students will often endure some hazing activities, in order to gain membership in the organization. Hazing is more than pranks or silly activities; it can be life-threatening, especially when alcohol or physical abuse is introduced. For a more detailed definiton of hazing, see www.StopHazing.org The founding fathers of our fraternities did not haze each other; yet hazing is a persistent issue in human societies. Marching bands, varsity and club sports, honor societies, and other student organizations are particularly at risk for hazing activities. If you or someone you know is subjected to hazing, report it immediately to someone who can help. This includes the Office of the Dean of Students, the organization's advisor, or the police.
